Millennia before recorded history, an unknown event spawned a massive amount of raw magical energy. As the hot state of its raw energy began to cool, it would coalesce into two forms: Selune, the goddess of creation, and Shar, the goddess of destruction. Living in perfect balance, the two of them saw boundless potential and a chance to build a home within the disorder of the universe. And so, they began to tame the chaos around them.
First, they named the vast expanse of space around them the Astral Sea. Within its emptiness, the two deities dispersed their energies to create the elemental planes of water, fire, earth and air. Where these planes met, their energies merged into a single realm, which they dubbed the inner plane. It was a land suffused with magic, but unstable amidst its uncontrolled power. As such, the sisters created the Veil, trapping the mana behind it to create the Spirit Realm.
With the groundwork laid, Shar and Selune channelled their energy once more to create the mortal races. First came the elves, then the dwarves, then the humans, and other races swiftly followed. However, the children of the gods lived short, violent lives. Their need for power and organisation spawned the outer planes, embodiments of law, chaos, good and evil which each sought to make their own mark on the mortal races. To help them withstand the chaos of the fledging land, the gods entrusted the mortals with the power of faith, resulting in the birth of the divine pantheon. From the Gods came divine magic, and with their guidance, the Divine Age began.
For centuries, the mortal races scrambled to leave their mark upon the land. The Elves sequestered themselves in the great city of Radiance, rallying behind the learned Oghma to uncover the secrets of the universe. Dwarven warlord Gildac Redhelm quickly rose to power in their absence, waging a relentless campaign for the western continent under the banner of Tempus. The humans would evade him with the help of Farendis, slowly conquering the eastern continent with legendary explorer and cartographer Percival Marr.
But faith, like all things, could not contain curiosity forever. Eventually, mages learnt to draw power directly from the bleeding mana of the Spirit Realm, leading to the birth of arcane magic. This power spread quickly, and the need for divine intervention faded. The Gods withdrew, and as they did, a new era was slowly ushered in. It was here, at the beginning of the Mortal Age, that the Redhelm empire fell to Naivara Caelora. In her honour the continent was renamed Caelora, and she became known as the first great mage.
Today, Caelora stands as a land of untold stories, where frozen wastes, towering mountains, and ancient empires promise glory to those who seek it. Across the sea awaits Marenna, a continent of vast deserts, sprawling plains and glistening coasts. In a time where ruinous powers seek their return, who would stand up in defiance?
